Game of Thrones – The Tourney

I don’t have much to say about Sansa’s day at the Hand’s Tourney. It was mostly putting in lots of detail and having to draw more horses.

One of the best things about doing this is being able to do things on the scale that the book envisions but the show could never afford. The Hand’s tourney is one of those times. It’s easy to come up with something better than the show, but how big would the tourney be. I barely know how big historical tourneys were. Mr. Martin is pretty vague about it, though he does say a thousand smallfolk come. While I generally regard A Song of Ice and Fire as the middle ages on steroids and, when in doubt, I go big. I still felt I was forced to guess. Fortunately, this is entirely Sansa’s point of view so I don’t have to show anyone the whole thing.

One side note, I have to admit a small mistake I made. People might not notice what Knights are jousting but I tried to put the include relevant details. Anyway, I misread one of my references and because of that, I had Sandor Clegane jousting with Ser Balon Swann rather than Sandor’s brother, Gregor, The Mountain that Rides.

In today's Game of Thrones Illustration, Sansa Stark and her friend Jeyne Poole watch the jousting at the Hand's Tourney.

The jousting went all day and into the dusk, the hooves of the great warhorses pounding into the dusk, the hooves of the great warhorses pounding down the lists until the field was a ragged wasteland of torn earth. A dozen times Jeyne and Sansa cried out in unison as riders crashed together, lances exploding into splinters while the commons screamed for their favorites.
