Mermay 2026 – Day One – Hello
The Mermaids of Herschel Cove are back for this year’s Mermay!
I’m quite excited for this year for several reasons. First, I started making use of the photo references I’ve been collecting. In the past, I would use the coast of Maine for above-water scenes and, paradoxically, coral reefs for underwater. I quickly realized I’d lived in the northwest long enough to start showing some pride. So, I took a trip up north to Anacortes and took some very good coastal shots that I think will be useful.
Second, since I’ve been wanting to do more with these characters, be it a calendar or greeting cards. I realized I needed to make them more publicly acceptable. So, with some reluctance, I gave everybody a wardrobe.
I was pleasantly surprised by today’s prompt, hello. I thought I was biting off more than I could chew with this group shot featuring, from right to left, Ridley, Cleo, Vivian, Winifred, Jennifer, and Doris, but even though it took longer than it should’ve, everything looked very good. I look forward to seeing where the rest of the month will take this.
