A Storm of Swords – Rescue

A Storm of Swords – Rescue

At his darkest hour, Jaime comes to Tyrion’s rescue in the dungeon.

This is another one of those simple portraits that turned out far better than I anticipated. I think this might be the most Jamie Jamie I’ve done in this series. I was also very pleased with how the shadowing turned out.

On that topic, this is another scene that triggers my ongoing rant about torches in medieval fantasy.
This book is loosely based on the War of the Roses, and they had perfectly good lanterns in the 15th century! Not to mention we’re in an area with lots of loose straw lying around. They are a fire hazard.

Finally, despite the pleasure on Jaime’s face, I can’t help noticing that this is another nice moment right before a disaster. Admittedly, it’s one of the rare ones that don’t have a body count, but in his ongoing attempts to redeem himself in about a minute, Jaime is going to destroy his friendship with his brother. It was tempting to do that one, but there is so much in this chapter that I decided to pretend that for once, I was adapting the show.

“Is that any way to speak about our lady mother?” The man moved forward, a torch in his left hand. “This is even more ghastly than my cell at Riverrun, though not quite so dank.”
