Guards! Guards! The Patrician

In today’s Discworld illustration we meet the Patrician of Ankh Morpork, Havelock Vetinari. While Vetenari appears in other books, before this he is just a generic ruthless ruler of the city. Guards! Guards! Is his first appearance as the fully defined character that we come to know and love.

My problem with this image was as a long-time reader of Discworld, I always imagine Vetinari sitting behind his desk. However here, I couldn’t find any mention of one only the chair he’s sitting on. While it wasn’t mentioned I chose to assume he’s holding court in the palace’s throne room which is shown in the next book, Men at Arms and is a parody of the Stewards of Gondor.

It was the finger. The finger was a mistake. The Patrician was staring coldly at the finger. Van Pew followed his gaze, and quickly lowered the digit. The Patrician was not a man you shook a finger at unless you wanted to end up being able to count only to nine.
