Game of Thrones – Tall As A King

Game of Thrones – Tall As A King

After taking a break from this for most of the summer, I’m getting back to my Game of Thrones project. Starting with Jon meeting Tyrion, and Tyrion walks as “tall as a king”.

This is one of my favorite establishing scenes in the book, and I’m sure Peter Dinklage based his entire performance of Tyrion around it, but still, I have problems it. This is partly due to a show vs book issue but mostly due to one those little details you wish had Mr. Martin had resisted temptation over, or at least realized the error of his ways and edited it out of future editions.

The show vs book issue is the location. In the show, Jon and Tyrion meet in what looks like a stable. ( It’s essentially the medieval equivalent of sneaking out of a restaurant to have a smoke at the loading dock.) In the book, it’s the castle yard, much more public and, since I’m starting to use Shadiversity’s “True Winterfell” model as my main reference for Winterfell, wide open. (It’s also why I have Tyrion climbing a set of stairs to return to the Great Keep.)

The detail I wish was edited out, was Tyrion’s acrobatic skills, something I’m sure he would be physically incapable of doing. I usually deal with this by ignoring it, but it’s hard when Mr. Martin keeps bringing it up in later books.

Tyrion Lanister meets Jon Snow for the first time.

He favored Jon with a rueful grin. “Remember this, boy. All dwarfs may be bastards, yet not all bastards need be dwarfs.” And with that he turned and sauntered back into the feast, whistling a tune. When he opened the door, the light from within threw his shadow clear across the yard, and for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king.
