Mermay Day Twenty-Two Ablaze

Mermay Day Twenty-Two Ablaze

Today’s prompt, ablaze, puzzled me. Mainly, due to the question “what burns in the ocean?” other than ships, of course, but that would mean having the mermaids watching in the distance where it was unclear whether they were mermaids or not… (It didn’t stop some of my friends and colleagues using that exact image.)

Anyway, I’ve been rereading and illustrating A Song and Ice and Fire a lot recently, so the image of the mad jester, Patchface, singing a song about the fire under the sea while watching a huge bonfire was what occurred to me after I asked the first question.

For today's Mermay illustration, a mermaid watches an underwater bonfire with the jester, Patchface.

“Under the sea, smoke rises in bubbles, and flames burn green and blue and black,” Patchface sang somewhere.
