Game of Thrones – The Shadows Come to Dance

Game of Thrones – The Shadows Come to Dance

Mirri Maz Duur casting the blood spell is one of my favorite scenes in the first book. Mainly because, not counting the Others, it’s the first time we see magic in the setting. It’s also the one I have to read several times before I draw it because the way I remember the shadows from my first reading has very little to do with what happens.

For assorted reasons I always remember the shadows as if they’re the ones in the Wizard Suliman’s spells in Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle. (can’t find any links, sorry.)

Not counting him being far in the background, here, this is the first time I get to draw Ser Jorah Mormont! Another character who doesn’t look a thing like the actor who plays him in the show. The hardest problem I had was deciding what his armor looked like. The reason was the usage of the word mail. In a modern reading, I would automatically assume mail means chainmail. In fact, I already made that assumption with Jon here. However Mr. Martin likes to use obscure words and usage, and originally mail just means armor. Having said that, he’s vague enough that I can’t always assume that.

In today's Game of Thrones illustration, the shadows dance as Mirri Maz Duur casts her friends.

Mirri Maz Duur’s voice rose to a high, ululating wail that sent a shiver down Dany’s back. Some of the Dothraki began to mutter and back away. The tent was aglow with the light of braziers within. Through the blood-spattered sandsilk, she glimpsed shadows moving.
Mirri Maz Duur was dancing, and not alone.
