Mermay 2025 – Day Twenty – Clown
The hardest part of today’s prompt was figuring out what a mermaid clown would do. I’m fairly certain you can’t juggle underwater. Then I needed to decide what the clown would look like. While doing my very brief research, I focused on nineteenth-century posters. In the process, I discovered Moulin Rouge, the Nouveau Cirque performer, and one of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s favorite models, Cha-U-Kao!
While I’ve never been the biggest fan of Toulouse-Lautrec, the portraits of this clowness show a wonderful, assertive personality that I thought would be perfect, and I knew I had to use.
