A Storm of Swords – The Wolf and the Hound

Sansa is not enjoying Petyr and Lysa’s wedding party. Trying to stay out of the way, she takes comfort in the affection of an old friendly hound.

I’m sure Mr. Martin wasn’t referring to anything here at all!

There are several beautiful sweet Sansa scenes in this book that I can’t wait to illustrate. Unfortunately, most of them are also “snapshots before a disaster” scenes. This one is no exception, where in about two minutes, Marrilion will have to have the word “no” explained to him.

On a side note, I had a brief pause over what Mr. Martin meant by hound here. I eventually went with a wolfhound. In the process, I went on a slight tangent about the variety of dogs in these books just to make sure that the words dog and hound weren’t interchangeable. The only breeds mentioned by name I found in my search were mastiffs and greyhounds. While small dogs are mentioned, terriers are not.

Sansa found Bryen’s old blind dog in her little alcove beneath the steps, and lay down next to him. He woke and licked her face. “You sad old hound,” she said, ruffling his fur.
