A Storm of Swords – Beware… Beyond

Wanting to learn as fast as possible Davos chooses the most difficult document on the table. This turns out to be a message from Sam for the five kings to be beware of, or beyond, or…

I admit to having problems with this scene.

Not getting into theories about the Maester conspiracy, but even at the best of the times, wouldn’t Ravenlore include an intricate shorthand designed to put a maximum amount of information onto something a Raven could carry? If this is the case, this wouldn’t be something that Davos’s first-grade reading level could handle.

Heck, I doubt an educated non-maester, such as Tyrion, could read it!

“To the . . . five kings,” read Davos, hesitating briefly over five, which he did not often see written out. “The king . . . be . . . the king . . . beware?”
“Beyond,” the maester corrected.
