Mermay 2023 Day One – Self Portrait

Mermay 2023 Day One – Self Portrait

It’s that time of the year again, another month of practicing my watercolors for the month of Mermay! It’s also another year of delving into one of my lesser side projects, The Mermaids of Herchel Cove! Every year I hope that the prompts will lead me to another angle with them and perhaps even a storyline.

That being said, as usual, I’m mostly disappointed by this year’s prompt list. After being disappointed before, it’s been tempting to go and do my own thing. The reason I don’t is I like the communal aspect of the challenge and like seeing what everybody else does with the same prompt. So, one thing I’ve done differently is to get an early start going over the prompts and thinking about the possibilities.

So, starting with today, the prompt is “self-portrait”. I assume they’re hoping you will do a self-portrait of yourself as a mermaid.

I’ve decided to be deliberately thick and miss the hint.

Instead, I had one of my regular mermaids, Jennifer, who has shown an artistic streak in the past, do her very own self-portrait in an image loosely inspired by Norman Rockwell.
