A Storm of Swords – The Tower

A Storm of Swords – The Tower

Bran, Hodor, and the Reeds finish their trek through the mountains. They see a tower in the middle of a lake to seek shelter.

When I read this scene, I immediately thought of Castle Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh from the climax (denouement?) of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Though I misremembered it as a cylindrical tower. For all I know, Mr. Martin was thinking of it too.

I was very happy with how this turned out. I like how a lot of my favorite pictures in this series are location shots. The only mistake I made was originally giving it a conical roof, we’re in an area that expects a ton of snow every five years or so, only to find our crew walking around the top two pages later.

The tower stood upon an island, its twin reflected on the still blue waters. When the wind blew, ripples moved across the surface of the lake, chasing one another like boys at play. Oak trees grew thick along the lakeshore, a dense stand of them with a litter of fallen acorns on the ground beneath. Beyond them was the village, or what remained of it.
