A Storm of Swords – Flaming Sword

A Storm of Swords – Flaming Sword

After allowing Sandor a fair fight by taking his armor off, Beric reveals he still has an edge by setting his sword on fire.

My first instinct for this first display of magic in the book (not counting dragons and warging) was to put Beric in the foreground and focus on Sandor’s look of horror. But the more I thought about it the more I thought the sword and Beric’s clinical disinterest were the most important things.

Unsmiling, Lord Beric laid the edge of his longsword against the palm of his left hand, and drew it slowly down. Blood ran dark from the gash he made, and washed over the steel.
And then the sword took fire.
