A Storm of Swords – Swords

A Storm of Swords – Swords

Tyrion returns to The Red Keep to report to his father. Tywin is inspecting the newly forged valerian steel swords made from the Stark family blade Ice.

I’ve had justifiable criticism about unintentionally trivializing Tyrion’s role in his recent marriage with Sansa. But I think we can all agree that there is nothing good to say about the enabling sociopath who is behind the whole thing.

I tried to make the literary version of Tywin as terrifying and irredeemable without any sign of “Draco in Leather pants” or Charles Dance’s charisma.

On a side note, Taiwan is wearing a houppelande which is a kind of medieval long coat. For some reason, I always find that I like to put all of our character characters in quote civilian gear unquote, as much as possible. In Tywin’s case, it leads to the fact that all of the scariest things he’s doing are behind the desk rather than out on the battlefield.

His father glanced up. “I did. Come have a look at this.” A bundle of oilcloth lay on the table between them, and Lord Tywin had a longsword in his hand. “A wedding gift for Joffrey,” he told Tyrion. The light streaming through the diamond-shaped panes of glass made the blade shimmer black and red as Lord Tywin turned it to inspect the edge, while the pommel and crossguard flamed gold. “With this fool’s jabber of Stannis and his magic sword, it seemed to me that we had best give Joffrey something extraordinary as well. A king should bear a kingly weapon.”
