A Storm of Swords – The Little Crannogman

Meera tells the story of a little crannogman who we’re all 99.99% sure is Howland Reed.

We start with Howland rowing toward the Twins in the dark of night. This one was tricky. It’s hard to draw night scenes by hatching. The other thing was not realizing just how big, or at least how wide, the Twins are. I suspect if I’d shown them at their actual scale they wouldn’t have fit in this picture. In hindsight, I think it would have looked better to have Howland directly underneath the Twins looking up, but I’m not sure how clear that would have been.

The most frustrating part of doing this picture was realizing that I’d missed that Meera had been wearing bronze scale mail until now.

“He passed beneath the Twins by night so the Freys would not attack him, and when he reached the Trident he climbed from the river and put his boat on his head and began to walk. It took him many a day, but finally he reached the Gods Eye, threw his boat in the lake, and paddled out to the Isle of Faces.”
