Mermay 2022 – Day Twenty-Eight – Ethnic

I wasn’t comfortable with today’s prompt, ethnic. It’s such a loaded adjective, and I have enough trouble keeping my foot out of my mouth at the best of times.

On top of that, the only mermaids in my cast whom I would describe as ethnic (unless you consider being a mermaid as an ethnicity) are Winnifred and Jenifer. They are Mami Wata, whose family moved to Herschel Cove from the Caribbean for the better shipwrecks. However, I admit that, at the time, I thought Mami Wata was a word for Afro-Caribbean mermaids. Having done more research, I’m not entirely sure if they’re that or an individual water goddess.

Either way, I found a lovely traditional Jamaican dress for Jennifer to wear.
