Mermay 2021 Day One – Angelic
My favorite annual watercolor exercise, Mermay, is here again. For those who aren’t familiar with Mermay, it’s an annual art challenge created by cartoonist Tom Bancroft to draw one mermaid a day for the month of May. I use it as a way to practice my watercolors before visiting my folks in Maine so I don’t waste the first couple of days doing substandard landscapes. Regrettably, thanks to Covid, I’m not going to Maine again, so, no Downeast landscapes. Still, it’s good to get your regular exercise in, so I’m doing it anyway, so, here we go with the first prompt, “angelic”.
I’m always conflicted with the prompts. However, I like the sense of community and seeing how everybody interprets the same concept. I’m starting with the lineup of mermaid characters I’ve been putting together for my “Mermaids of Herschel Cove” series. Our “angelic” mermaid is Galateia the most “traditional” one of the bunch. (So not very angelic) She doesn’t actually have wings. There’s a manta ray swimming right behind her.
