A Clash of Kings – Drink
“Why, because he treats you so sweetly?” The queen took a flagon of sweet plum wine from a passing serving girl and filled Sansa’s cup. “Drink,” she commanded coldly. “Perhaps it will give you the courage to deal with truth for a change.”
A Clash of Kings Chapter 61 – Sansa
At the height of the banquet, Cersei confirms what Sansa has suspected. That Ser Ilyn Payne is at the party to kill any dissenters, and to kill everybody if Stannis wins. She also drops the motherly act and starts blatantly bullying Sansa, forcing her to drink an entire goblet of sweet plum wine.
I remember when I first read this scene, It struck me that it showed how religious Westerosi culture is. To say “I was praying” is not a piece of dialogue that absolves you. Since the Westerosi sincerely believe in Gods and prayer, to pray for the wrong thing could be regarded as treason. It also shows how Cersei’s low-level paranoia at first acts as a superpower. She doesn’t have to know anything. All she has to do is suspect.
