A Clash of Kings – The Song
“He has a song,” the man replied. “He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire.” He looked up when he said it and his eyes met Dany’s, and it seemed as if he saw her standing there beyond the door. “There must be one more,” he said, though whether he was speaking to her or the woman in the bed she could not say. “The dragon has three heads.” He went to the window seat, picked up a harp, and ran his fingers lightly over its silvery strings. Sweet sadness filled the room as man and wife and babe faded like the morning mist, only the music lingering behind to speed her on her way.
A Clash of Kings Chapter 48 – Daenerys
Daenerys has a vision of a man, a woman, and the song of Ice and Fire.
Here we are again at one of the most iconic scenes of the book. Obviously, I was looking forward to doing it. I was originally imagining having it with Daenerys standing in the middle of the scene. She would be watching the drama, invisible, like Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Unfortunately, the format didn’t give enough room. So, I ended up doing it as a straight flashback.
The disadvantage of doing it this way is we technically don’t have enough information. We can be almost certain the man is Rhaegar. However, we can’t be sure if the woman is Elia, Lyanna, or someone else.
I’m not completely sold on the elopement theory. So, I guessed and went with Elia.
Note: After posting this comment on Tumblr, I had several people explain to me in great detail how they are explicitly Rhaegar and Elia. To add to my embarrassment, I found Dany identifying them in her next chapter.
