Clash of Kings – The Small Council

I was looking forward to drawing Tyrion’s arrival at the small council. Many of my favorite parts of A Clash of Kings involve him being a master player of the game. Because of this, I was looking forward to his first tete a tete with Cersei.

Unfortunately, when I reread the chapter, I found a major flaw. After Tyrion climbs into the hand’s chair he doesn’t go anywhere until the end of the scene. Cersei is sitting in the king’s chair. She doesn’t move either. The text doesn’t actually say where these chairs are at the table, but it’s easy to assume they’re on opposite sides. If that’s the case, how is Cersei able to slap Tyrion.

I ended up doing something I mostly hoped to never do, use the show as a reference. The scene is almost entirely rewritten with entirely new dialogue. While the chairs are indeed on the opposite sides of the table., the show makes a notable change by having an angry Cersei get up and goes to sit next to Tyrion. I figured book Cersei would never get up to Tyrion. So I took the liberty of having him walk up to her.

For today's Clash of Kings illustration, Tyrion Lannister arrives at the small council and talks with his sister.

“Father did,” said Tyrion. “That is why he sent me. To put an end to these follies and bring your son to heel.”
