Inktober 2019 – Day Seventeen – Ornament

Inktober 2019 – Day Seventeen – Ornament

There’s a lot of times I really hate the assorted prompt lists these challenges provide. If it hadn’t been for the fact I’ve been busy and distracted I’d have made my own. Today’s prompt, ornament is no exception.

I’d been stumped by it for a while. Sure I could just draw an ornament, but that didn’t feel particularly Halloweeny, and besides, where’s the fun in that. I finally thought of the temple of Dagon in Lovecraft’s Shadow Over Innsmouth and imagined one of the Deep Ones decorating a shrine to Dagon.

I admit I mostly used the “real” Dagon from Babylonian imagery for this, rather than the god of the deep ones. I’ll rationalize it by claiming whatever human hybrid who made it didn’t know any better. I gave it some tentacles, just to be on the safe side.

While doing this it occurred to me that Lovecraft’s elder sign looks a bit like a piece of coral. Making it perfect for a Deep One’s symbolism and decoration.
