A Clash of Kings – Treasons

A Clash of Kings – Treasons

I think Varys may be one of my favorite secondary characters in A Song of Ice and Fire. So naturally, any excuse to draw him I get, I jump at. He’s one of the only characters I have fan theories for. (Though if the evidence on the show is canon, most of them are sunk) Anyway, most of my take on Varys is he’s just one more disguise used by someone I like to call the pro from Lys. Scenes where the pro lets his mask slip, such as here where he’s discussing treasons with Tyrion, are especially interesting.

I’m not sure if I successfully captured the expression Mr. Martin describes here. It’s hard to make eyes twinkle in line work. But I think it’s clear he’s left his mincing eunuch hat at the door.

For today's Clash of Kings illustration, Varys gets down to business with treasons to discuss.

The eunuch’s smile never flickered, but his eyes glittered with something that was not laughter. “You are kind to ask, my lord, but my tale is long and sad, and we have treasons to discuss.” He drew a parchment from the sleeve of his robe.
